Our September sale of native plants and pottery is coming up: Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th. The sale takes place in the garden of Pine Ridge Pottery Studio, north of Carp.
There is no pretending that this drought summer has not been very hard on Lis’s fern garden, as it has been very hard on my new garden in Eganville. We will try to look for a silver lining and say that this is an opportunity to see which plants are tough and survive very challenging conditions. One of the great benefits of this September sale, over two days, is that it is a much more leisurely occasion than the hectic spring sales. There is time to chat about what has done well and what new plants might suit your garden.
A few new species are now available that didn’t make it on to my August Plant Availability list: common bluestar, Hubricht’s bluestar, American poke, and hop-tree. If you are at all interested in hop-tree, which is a host plant for the caterpillars of giant swallowtail butterflies, these first-year plants are economical and they are also third generation grown the Ottawa valley, so one can expect them to be reasonably hardy.
I can bring pre-paid orders into the Natives & Clay sale. I will put up a revised Plant Availability list in the next few days.
