Botanical Name: Penstemon procerus var. tolmiei
Height: about 10 cm
Bloom time: all summer
Growing Conditions: Full sun. Well-drained rocky soils. Excellent in troughs
Origins: BC. A taller variety within the species, Penstemon procerus var. procerus, occurs all across the west into Manitoba, but the compact variety, tomiei, occurs only in BC and adjacent USA. It grows at high altitudes, so we can reasonably hope it is hardy here.
Remarks: Another North American cutie for the rock garden. The long-summer bloom time makes it especially valuable in the garden. The taller variety from the prairies is also attractive, but quite different.
