Common Wood Sorrel

Wood Sorrel growing in cool, damp spot under conifers in the woods at Beaux Arbres.

Botanical Name: Oxalis montana

Height: Very low.

Season of bloom: Summer.

Growing Conditions: Shade. Cool, constantly moist soil.

Wildlife benefits:

From Ottawa Valley or eastern Ontario sources: Yes.

Remarks: Totally charming! More common in the Maritimes. I have seen it growing in open sunny glades on Digby Neck, where it was kept cool and moist by Atlantic breezes. In Ontario, it thrives in cool shade.

Similar species: Not at all similar, but a good companion plant: Creeping Snowberry.
