Botanical Name: Solidago squarrosa
Height: 1 m or more
Bloom Time: August and September
Growing Conditions: At a guess, full sun and well-drained soil. We are growing our stock plants on unimproved sand, and they seem fine. I am going to have to try out individuals in progressively shadier locations to get an idea of how much shade they can tolerate.
Wildlife Benefits: All the late blooming goldenrods are of enormous importance for many pollinators.
Seed source: Ottawa Valley.
Seeds: Germination Code: C(60) + D. Surface sow small seeds and then give 60 days cold, moist stratification.
Remarks: The wand-shaped inflorescence makes a very attractive focal point among mounding asters. Combine with Rough Blazing Star for a similar shape, different colour combination.
Similar Species: A distinctive Goldenrod. You may also like Ohio Goldenrod, Stiff Goldenrod, Grey Goldenrod, or Blue-stemmed Goldenrod. Another Goldenrod with wand-like flowers is Zigzag Goldenrod, a spreading ground cover for shade
